Friday, August 29, 2025 -Spain is confronting one of its most severe wildfire seasons in decades, and the Spanish royal family has taken an active role in the response. King Felipe VI cut short a family vacation in Greece with Queen Letizia and their daughters, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía, to oversee the emergency efforts.
Upon returning, the king visited the Military Emergency Unit (UME) headquarters near Madrid, where he met with officials and reviewed ongoing operations. Nearly 1,900 personnel are currently deployed to combat nearly 20 major wildfires, particularly in Galicia.
King Felipe expressed gratitude to those fighting the fires, stating, “Thank you to all active military, civilian, volunteer, etc., that you are fighting the devastating wildfires ravaging much of our country.” Despite the crisis, the royal daughters have continued their studies and training, with Princess Leonor preparing for her final year at the San Javier General Air Academy and Infanta Sofía attending Forward College, studying Politics and International Relations across Europe.
The royal family plans to visit affected areas in the coming days to assess damage, support relief efforts, and thank emergency responders. Their involvement highlights the active role of Spain’s monarchy in national emergencies and the broader public response to one of the country’s most challenging wildfire seasons in recent memory.
