Kick denies $49M fine rumor after streamer’s death

Wednesday, August 27, 2025 - Kick, the fast-growing streaming platform, has found itself under heavy scrutiny after the tragic death of French streamer Jean Pormanove during a livestream. Online rumors quickly spread suggesting the company had already been fined $49 million over alleged safety failures.

However, Kick co-founder Bijan Tehrani moved swiftly to shut down the speculation, calling the viral claims “not true” and urging users to rely on official statements rather than tabloid-style panic.

Public reaction to the denial has been divided. Fans of the platform defended Kick’s transparency, while critics argued that the company should still be held accountable for what happened on its service.

French authorities have already opened an inquiry into the incident, and Australian regulators have warned that under eSafety rules, fines of up to \$49 million could still be imposed if the company is found negligent in moderating harmful content. This uncertainty has fueled debate over how much responsibility live-streaming platforms should bear for extreme or tragic on-air moments.

The controversy comes at a critical moment for Kick, which has positioned itself as a challenger to Twitch with looser moderation and lucrative creator deals. Analysts suggest the incident could reshape the platform’s future, with regulatory investigations likely to bring tougher rules and stricter oversight.

For now, Kick’s co-founders face the difficult task of reassuring both governments and users that the platform can grow without compromising safety.
