Wednesday, August 13, 2025 - Disgraced former Premier League referee David Coote has been handed an eight-week suspension by the Football Association (FA) and ordered to attend an education programme following disparaging remarks he made about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
Coote was dismissed by Professional Game Match Officials Ltd
(PGMOL) in December after a video surfaced on social media in November showing
him making derogatory comments about Klopp and Liverpool dating back to 2020.
The FA found Coote guilty of an “aggravated breach” of rule
E3.2, citing his reference to Klopp’s German nationality in the video. In
announcing the verdict on Tuesday, the FA said Coote expressed “deep remorse”
and admitted his comments were “crass and inappropriate.”
Coote was charged by the FA in June. At that time, the FA
confirmed he would face no further disciplinary action over separate gambling
misconduct allegations, which he denied, after a full investigation.
A separate video showing Coote allegedly snorting white
powder during Euro 2024 appeared in November. Following this, UEFA banned him
from all officiating duties until June 2026.
Earlier this year, Coote publicly came out as gay and
revealed that his struggles with hiding his sexuality had contributed to poor
decisions.
