Tuesday, February 22, 2022 – A young lady from Meru County is serving a three-year jail sentence for a crime she didn’t commit.
According to Makena, she completed her form four in the year 2019 and since her mum could not afford to further her education, she decided to look for a job to assist her mum.
She got a wines and spirits job but after three days, she was arrested by Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officers for selling alcoholic drinks which had not been approved by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).
She said she pleaded with them when they arrested her because her boss never showed up.
She was later arraigned in court and the judge sentenced her to three years in jail or a cash bail of Sh 100,000.
Makena, 22, claimed that she was raised by a single mother and she could not afford the Sh100, 000 and when she tried calling her boss, she never picked up her calls.
Makena claimed that despite the judge knowing that she was not the owner of the shop, he went ahead and sentenced her for a crime she never committed yet the real culprit is free.
Makena, who has already spent 6 months in jail, is now requesting Chief Justice Martha Koome to assist her since the boss who employed her is still roaming freely in the streets.
