US approves $2.1 billion Patriot missile sale to Ukraine

Saturday, October 31, 2026 - Ukraine has received a major boost to its air defence capabilities after the United States approved a proposed $2.1 billion sale of 500 Patriot PAC-3 interceptor missiles.

Announced by the US State Department on October 30, 2026, the deal comes as Russia intensifies missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure. The approval is particularly significant as Kyiv continues to seek additional air defence supplies to protect civilians and essential services ahead of winter.

The proposed package includes 500 advanced Patriot interceptors, spare parts and logistical support. Canada, Germany and Norway will finance the purchase through the US JUMPSTART programme, alongside funding supported by the European Union's Ukraine Support Loan.

Washington confirmed that no American government funds would be used, while defence contractor Lockheed Martin will serve as the principal supplier. However, the approval does not mean immediate delivery, as the agreement remains subject to congressional review and no confirmed delivery schedule has been announced. Reports indicate that manufacturing and supply constraints could delay the arrival of the missiles for several years.

The agreement highlights growing international efforts to strengthen Ukraine's ability to defend its airspace as the war with Russia continues. Patriot systems are particularly important because they can intercept ballistic missiles that threaten major cities, energy facilities and other critical infrastructure. However, the gap between Ukraine's urgent military requirements and the available supply of interceptors remains a major challenge.

With winter approaching, Kyiv is pressing its international partners to accelerate deliveries and strengthen existing defence systems. The effectiveness of the latest agreement will ultimately depend on how quickly the approved weapons can be manufactured and delivered.
