Three Russian gymnasts denied Dutch visas ahead of world championships over their public support for the invasion of Ukraine

Thursday, October 15, 2026 -Three leading Russian gymnasts have been denied visas to the Netherlands just days before the 2026 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Rotterdam, scheduled for October 17–25. The athletes are Angelina Melnikova, Viktoria Listunova and Anna Kalmykova.

The decision comes amid continued international scrutiny of Russian athletes over their alleged public support for Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and links to Russian state or security institutions. The visa refusals have placed fresh pressure on Russia’s return to international sporting competition.

The Russian Gymnastics Federation has condemned the decision, describing it as discriminatory and arguing that it could undermine fair competition. The refusal notices reportedly stated that one or more Schengen-area countries considered the athletes a threat to international relations.

Russia has announced plans to appeal to the International Olympic Committee and World Gymnastics. The controversy is particularly significant because the Rotterdam championships will offer the first team qualification opportunities for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The case highlights the growing tension between sporting fairness, national security and accountability for public political support during wartime. While Russian officials insist that the gymnasts are being unfairly excluded, critics point to their reported pro-war activities and affiliations.

With Olympic qualification opportunities at stake, the dispute could have consequences beyond the championship itself. The immediate question is whether diplomatic appeals will change the decision before competition begins, or whether the three athletes will miss one of the most important events on the road to the 2028 Olympics.
