Suspect in deadly Paris suburb shooting sent for psychiatric observation

Monday, October 26, 2026 - French authorities have resumed questioning a 39-year-old suspect accused of carrying out a deadly shooting across Trappes and nearby La Verrière, west of Paris. The October 23 attack left one person dead and several others injured, including a 12-year-old girl.

The suspect, identified as Kevin T., was initially transferred to a police psychiatric unit for observation after a medical assessment raised concerns about his fitness to continue questioning. Following a further psychiatric examination on October 26, investigators were cleared to resume his custody.

The investigation has taken on wider significance after French President Emmanuel Macron described the shooting as a racist terrorist attack. Prosecutors are examining whether victims were deliberately targeted because of their ethnic backgrounds. However, the suspect has denied the racist character of the crimes while not disputing the reported shootings, according to prosecutors.

Investigators are also examining evidence recovered during searches and toxicology results showing cannabis and cocaine in his blood. The case remains under investigation, and the allegations have yet to be determined by a court.

Authorities now face the urgent task of establishing the full circumstances of the attack, determining the suspect's criminal responsibility and ensuring that victims and their families receive justice. The psychiatric assessments are intended to establish whether he can participate in further questioning; they do not, by themselves, determine guilt or innocence.

The case has also intensified concerns about racist violence and public safety in France as political tensions rise ahead of the country's next presidential election. Investigators' findings and any subsequent court proceedings will be crucial in establishing accountability and addressing the concerns raised by the attack.
