Sri Lanka rescues 40 Iranian sailors from stranded ships

Monday, October 26, 2026 - Sri Lanka has rescued 40 Iranian sailors experiencing medical emergencies aboard commercial vessels stranded in international waters off its coast, providing urgent medical treatment before arranging their return to Iran.

The operation was coordinated after the Iranian Embassy requested assistance through diplomatic channels, according to the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry. The sailors were brought ashore at Galle Harbour on October 24 and repatriated the following day, October 25, 2026. Authorities said the rescue involved crews from 19 ships, highlighting the growing humanitarian concerns surrounding vessels stranded near the island.

The rescue comes amid heightened tensions over restrictions on Iranian shipping and reports that vessels near Sri Lanka have been unable to return home. Some ships have reportedly faced shortages of essential supplies, including food, water and fuel.

Local media have reported that the vessels include US-sanctioned oil tankers, although Sri Lankan authorities have not publicly confirmed the identities of the ships involved in this particular medical evacuation. Colombo has stressed that its intervention was a humanitarian response and does not amount to a commitment to provide broader assistance to the stranded vessels.

The immediate challenge is to address the welfare of crews still at sea while avoiding further diplomatic complications. Sri Lanka must balance its humanitarian responsibilities and maritime obligations with its economic and diplomatic relationships with both the United States and Iran.

The rescue demonstrates the importance of responding quickly to medical emergencies at sea, regardless of the wider political tensions surrounding a vessel. As the shipping standoff continues, international attention will focus on whether additional assistance becomes necessary and how authorities can protect seafarers without escalating the dispute.
