Russia's deadly attacks damage homes across Ukraine on PUTIN's birthday, ZELENSKYY says

Thursday, October 8, 2026 - Russia launched one of its largest aerial attacks on Ukraine on October 7, firing dozens of missiles and drones across multiple regions.

Ukrainian officials said residential buildings and energy infrastructure were damaged, with the deadliest strike hitting a five-storey apartment block in Pryluky, where civilians, including children, were killed. Kyiv and other cities also reported deaths, injuries and widespread damage.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said energy infrastructure was among the main targets and warned that Russian ballistic missiles remain a major challenge for Ukraine's air defences.

Ukraine said it intercepted a large share of the attacking drones but continues to seek additional air-defence systems, particularly Patriot interceptors, as the country prepares for further attacks and the coming winter.

The timing of the bombardment drew particular attention because it came on Russian President Vladimir Putin's 74th birthday. Zelenskyy described the assault as deliberate and demonstrative, while Russia's Defence Ministry said its forces targeted military-industrial facilities and port infrastructure.

With civilian areas again bearing the consequences, the latest strikes underline the immediate pressure on Ukraine to strengthen air defences and protect its cities and energy network.
