Residents leave Russian-occupied Oleshky by bus under truce brokered by MELANIA TRUMP

Saturday, October 31, 2026 - Hundreds of residents have begun leaving the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky following a rare humanitarian ceasefire brokered by First Lady Melania Trump.

On October 30, 2026, buses carrying civilians departed the war-damaged city in southern Ukraine as Russian and Ukrainian officials coordinated an evacuation and humanitarian relief operation. The temporary truce has created a crucial opportunity for residents who have endured years of conflict, food shortages, limited medical supplies and dangerous living conditions. Approximately 2,000 people were estimated to remain in Oleshky before the operation.

The humanitarian convoy included 25 buses, nine ambulances and vehicles carrying essential supplies such as food and medicine. Residents were given the option of travelling to Ukrainian-controlled territory or relocating to Russia, while those choosing to remain were promised humanitarian assistance.

People heading to Ukraine faced a complicated journey through Russian-held Crimea, southern Russia and Belarus before reaching Ukrainian territory. According to Melania Trump, more than 750 people could be evacuated safely. Pope Leo XIV also appealed to both sides to facilitate humanitarian assistance and protect civilians.

The evacuation represents an important humanitarian breakthrough amid the continuing Russia-Ukraine war, demonstrating that limited cooperation remains possible even while fighting continues elsewhere. However, the temporary ceasefire does not signal a wider peace agreement, and thousands of civilians across conflict-affected areas remain exposed to insecurity and displacement.

Ukrainian officials have expressed hope that the humanitarian arrangement could provide a model for assisting other isolated communities. For residents of Oleshky, the immediate priority is reaching safety, accessing essential services and rebuilding lives after years of conflict.
