Polish president turns plane around after 'coup' at nation’s top court

Saturday, October 31, 2026 - Poland has been thrown into a fresh political and judicial crisis after President Karol Nawrocki abruptly abandoned his trip to Senegal and returned home following a controversial development at the country's Constitutional Tribunal.

The decision came on Friday, October 30, 2026, after police were deployed around the court in Warsaw and its president, Bogdan Święczkowski, was suspended from his duties. Nawrocki said his presence was necessary at such a critical moment, highlighting the seriousness of the escalating institutional dispute.

The crisis intensified after senior judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska announced the suspension of Święczkowski and his deputy, Bartłomiej Sochański, taking over the tribunal's leadership. The court subsequently condemned the move as an alleged "coup d'état," while supporters of the opposition Law and Justice party gathered outside the building to protest.

Police maintained a heavy security presence after demonstrators reportedly threw objects at officers. Prime Minister Donald Tusk's government maintains that its actions are part of efforts to restore the rule of law, while opposition figures accuse the administration of interfering with judicial independence.

The unfolding confrontation exposes deep divisions within Poland's political and judicial institutions, raising concerns about constitutional authority, judicial independence and public confidence in government. The dispute could further complicate relations between President Nawrocki and Prime Minister Tusk, whose administrations remain divided over judicial appointments and institutional reforms.

With protests continuing and competing legal claims emerging, Poland faces increasing pressure to resolve the crisis through constitutional procedures and prevent further institutional instability. International attention is also growing as the European Union closely monitors developments surrounding the country's rule of law.
