Thursday, September 10, 2026 - The United Arab Emirates says it hopes Algeria’s decision to sever diplomatic relations will be temporary, as a sudden diplomatic rupture between the two countries raises fresh concerns about regional stability.
Algeria announced on September 10 that it was cutting ties after saying it had exhausted all avenues for preserving the relationship, accusing the UAE of increasingly “provocative or hostile” actions.
The UAE has responded by stressing its respect for the Algerian people and its desire to preserve the bonds and shared interests between the two countries.
The dispute comes amid wider disagreements over regional issues, including Western Sahara, Israel and the UAE’s growing influence across North Africa and the Sahel. Algeria has given the UAE ambassador 48 hours to comply with the decision.
The immediate focus will now shift to whether diplomatic channels can eventually reopen and prevent the crisis from becoming a long-term break.
Any prolonged rupture could affect political cooperation, business ties and wider regional diplomacy at a time when North Africa is already facing significant geopolitical pressure. For the UAE, keeping the door open to dialogue could prove critical if both sides seek a path back to negotiations.
