Friday, September 18, 2026 - Romanian President Nicusor Dan has nominated European Parliament member Siegfried Muresan to become the country’s next prime minister, in an effort to end a prolonged political deadlock.
Muresan, 44, is a member of the center-right National Liberal Party and a vice-president of the European People’s Party. He has accepted the nomination and said work on a proposed government program would begin immediately.
Muresan now faces the challenge of securing enough parliamentary support to form a government. The nomination comes after the previous government led by Ilie Bolojan was removed in a no-confidence vote in May, leaving Romania with an interim administration for more than four months.
Dan said consultations had failed to produce a clear parliamentary majority, while Muresan had 10 days to present a cabinet and seek a confidence vote.
The nomination has already exposed divisions among Romania’s political parties. The National Liberal Party, USR and UDMR support Muresan, but they do not hold enough seats on their own to guarantee his confirmation.
The Social Democratic Party has expressed opposition to the nomination, while AUR has said it will not support a Muresan-led government. The coming days will therefore be crucial as negotiations determine whether Muresan can assemble a parliamentary majority and bring Romania’s political crisis closer to an end.
