Friday, September 18, 2026 - Russia has placed Zhanna Nemtsova, the daughter of murdered opposition politician Boris Nemtsov, on its international wanted list, escalating a criminal case against the journalist and public figure.
The move follows a Moscow City Court decision on September 17 upholding her arrest in absentia over allegations of organizing the activities of an organization deemed “undesirable” by Russian authorities.
The case is linked to the Boris Nemtsov Foundation for Freedom, which Nemtsova founded in Germany and which Russia designated as an “undesirable organization” in 2024.
The foundation supports independent Russian-language media and provides scholarships and other assistance to journalists, activists and researchers. Nemtsova has rejected the allegations and has been living outside Russia for years.
The international wanted-list move puts fresh pressure on Nemtsova as Russian authorities pursue the case while she remains abroad. Her arrest in absentia means the court order would take effect if she were extradited, deported or detained in Russia.
The development comes as Russia is also holding parliamentary elections, adding renewed attention to the treatment of opposition figures and independent political activity.
