RUBIO confirms 'foreign actor' involved in UK terror plot

Tuesday, September 29, 2026 - US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says a suspected terror plot near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, England, “clearly” involved a foreign actor, adding a new dimension to an investigation that remains active.

Five British nationals in their 20s were arrested near the U.S.-used airbase after suspicious activity involving three vans and masked individuals was reported. British counterterrorism police later released the suspects on bail while maintaining that they remain under investigation.

Rubio did not identify the foreign actor or provide evidence publicly linking a specific country to the incident. President Donald Trump has suggested a possible Iranian connection, while Iran has denied involvement.

British authorities have said they are examining several possibilities, including whether suspects may have been acting knowingly or unknowingly on behalf of a foreign state. Reports also indicate that no viable explosives were found in the vans.

The investigation now carries wider international security implications because RAF Fairford is used by US forces. Around 85 nearby households were evacuated during the initial security operation before residents were allowed to return, while security around the base remained heightened.

With British authorities still gathering evidence and Rubio indicating that more information could emerge, attention is now focused on establishing who, if anyone, was behind the suspected plot and what its intended target was.
