Tuesday, September 22, 2026 - Pope Leo XIV is preparing for his first visit to Latin America as pontiff, with a 12-day journey through Uruguay, Argentina and Peru scheduled for November 6–17, 2026.
The Vatican has released a detailed itinerary covering 10 cities and dozens of events, making the trip his longest international journey so far. The tour will include meetings with political leaders, Catholic communities, workers and marginalized groups.
The most personal part of the trip will come in Peru, where Leo spent about two decades as a missionary priest and bishop and holds Peruvian citizenship.
He will arrive in Lima on November 11 before traveling to Chiclayo, the diocese he led, as well as Cusco and Pucallpa in the Amazon region. His Peruvian schedule includes Masses, meetings with local communities and an encounter with representatives of Indigenous Amazonian peoples.
The return to Chiclayo is expected to draw particular attention because of Leo's close connection to the city. The Vatican has chosen “Let us open our hearts” as the motto for the Peru leg, reflecting the focus on faith, unity and the country's future.
With the November journey approaching, preparations are intensifying across the three countries as communities get ready for Leo's first major Latin American tour as pope.
