Thursday, September 17, 2026 - Peter Max, the vibrant psychedelic artist closely associated with the 1960s “flower power” movement, has died at the age of 88.
His son confirmed the death on September 16, 2026, while reports said Max died two days earlier in Manhattan.
No official cause of death was given, although the Associated Press reported that Max had been living with advanced dementia.
His colourful artwork, bold patterns, and cosmic imagery made him one of the most recognisable figures in modern pop art.
Max’s death closes the career of an artist whose work became closely linked with peace, optimism, and counterculture. His distinctive visual style continues to influence popular design, while his legacy remains central to the story of American psychedelic art.
