Monday, September 14, 2026 - A major search-and-rescue operation is underway in the Java Sea after the passenger ship Virgo Transport 8 lost contact while carrying 243 people.
Indonesian authorities have confirmed one death and rescued 86 survivors, while the fate of the remaining passengers remains unknown. The vessel was travelling from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan when communication was lost at around 2 a.m. local time on Sunday.
Rescue teams were mobilised after authorities received a distress call, with officials reporting that the vessel was facing severe weather roughly 80 nautical miles from the Basirih SAR Dock in Banjarmasin.
Of those aboard, 30 were crew members, while search teams continue working to locate people still missing. The recovery effort is unfolding under difficult conditions, making every hour critical for those who may still be alive at sea.
