Wednesday, September 16, 2026 - Nick Reiner will not face the death penalty if he is convicted in the killings of his parents, Hollywood filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced September 15 that prosecutors will not pursue capital punishment after reviewing the case and consulting members of the Reiner family. Reiner, 33, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder.
Reiner is accused of killing his parents at their Brentwood home in December 2025 and faces special-circumstance allegations, including lying in wait and multiple murders.
With prosecutors ruling out the death penalty, life imprisonment without the possibility of parole is now the maximum sentence he could receive if convicted. Reiner remains in custody without bail as the legal proceedings continue.
The case is expected to continue into 2027, with prosecutors and the defense still dealing with key legal issues surrounding the evidence and grand jury proceedings.
Reiner’s siblings have also asked that grand jury transcripts remain sealed, citing concerns about further trauma for the family. The next stages of the case are expected to bring greater focus to the allegations and the evidence prosecutors intend to present.
