Friday, September 18, 2026 - A third person has died from malaria in Frankfurt as authorities investigate a cluster of infections believed to be linked to Frankfurt Airport.
The latest victim lived in the Schwanheim district, about five kilometres from the airport, and had not recently travelled to a malaria-risk area or worked at the airport. The case is being treated as a possible instance of so-called airport malaria.
The latest death brings the number of malaria deaths linked to the current Frankfurt cluster to three. Six airport workers had previously been infected, with two of them dying, while two additional cases were recently identified in Schwanheim.
Health authorities believe an infected Anopheles mosquito may have arrived in Germany aboard an aircraft and later transmitted the parasite to residents in the area.
Authorities stress that the risk to the wider population remains very low, but residents and people working around the airport are being urged to take precautions against mosquito bites and seek medical advice if they develop unexplained fever.
Mosquito traps have been installed around the airport and affected residential areas, while captured mosquitoes are undergoing genetic analysis to investigate their origin and determine whether the infections share a common source.
