Wednesday, September 16, 2026 - India and Pakistan have traded formal protests after naval vessels from the two countries collided in the northern Arabian Sea on September 15.
India summoned Pakistan’s chargé d’affaires on Wednesday and described the conduct of Pakistani naval units as “unacceptable and unprofessional,” while saying the incident occurred in international waters. No major damage was reported.
Pakistan responded by summoning India’s chargé d’affaires and describing the incident as “highly provocative and unacceptable.”
Pakistani officials alleged that an Indian naval vessel carried out dangerous manoeuvres, while India maintains that the collision occurred in international waters and says the Pakistani vessel’s conduct led to the incident.
India said the incident was contrary to provisions of a 1991 bilateral agreement requiring the countries’ naval vessels and submarines to maintain a distance of at least three nautical miles in international waters.
Both sides have now lodged diplomatic protests, adding fresh tension between the nuclear-armed neighbours following the latest maritime confrontation.
