Monday, September 7, 2026 - A Greek Air Force F-4 Phantom fighter jet crashed during the Athens Flying Week air show at Tanagra Air Base, north of Athens, killing both pilots aboard.
The crash happened during a low-altitude maneuver in front of thousands of spectators, sending thick black smoke into the sky and triggering a major emergency response. No injuries were reported among spectators or nearby residents.
The aircraft went down shortly after takeoff, about two kilometers from the air base, before bursting into flames. Firefighters and emergency crews rushed to the scene as the blaze spread into a nearby area.
The remaining air-show events were cancelled, while authorities ordered people in the surrounding area to evacuate as rescue teams worked to recover the pilots.
The tragedy has cast a deep shadow over one of Greece’s major aviation events and prompted an investigation into what caused the crash.
Greek authorities have declared a period of mourning for the two airmen, while officials and military leaders expressed condolences to their families. Attention will now turn to the investigation as authorities work to establish exactly what went wrong during the fatal display.
