Wednesday, September 16, 2026 - At least 21 Palestinians, including 11 children and five women, were killed when a war-damaged residential building collapsed in Gaza City early Wednesday.
The six-storey building, which had previously been damaged by Israeli strikes, was sheltering displaced families when it suddenly gave way, leaving people trapped beneath the rubble. At least 14 others were injured.
Rescue teams faced severe difficulties as they searched for survivors, with limited heavy machinery forcing workers and residents to dig through the debris largely by hand.
The building had been considered structurally unsafe, but families continued living there because safer housing options remain extremely limited. Gaza’s civil defence has warned that many other damaged buildings pose similar risks to residents.
The collapse has renewed attention on the desperate living conditions facing Palestinians across Gaza, where widespread destruction has left many displaced people sheltering in damaged structures or tents.
