Friday, September 18, 2026 - At least five people, including three children, have been killed as Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi forces trade fresh attacks, deepening fears that the fighting could spread across the region.
Saudi authorities said debris from an intercepted Houthi drone killed a Yemeni resident and injured two others in Taif, marking the first reported civilian death in Saudi Arabia since the latest escalation began. In Yemen, Houthi-linked media reported deaths and injuries following Saudi-backed strikes in several areas.
The confrontation is also putting growing pressure on Yemen’s civilian population. More than 100,000 people have reportedly been displaced by the latest fighting, with some Yemenis fleeing across the Red Sea.
The Houthis have expanded their presence along Yemen’s Red Sea coast, while Saudi-backed forces continue fighting to push them back. The violence is also raising concerns over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical shipping route through which a significant share of global trade normally passes.
The situation remains highly volatile as both sides accuse the other of escalating the conflict. Saudi Arabia has said a Houthi drone was intercepted after being launched toward Mecca, a claim Houthi leader Abdel-Malik al-Houthi has strongly denied.
With attacks threatening civilians, oil infrastructure and international shipping, pressure is mounting on regional and international powers to prevent the confrontation from widening further.
