Tuesday, September 22, 2026 - Dubai has entered a 10-day official mourning period following the death of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, younger brother of Dubai’s Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
The Ruler’s Court announced the mourning period on September 21, with flags across the emirate to be flown at half-mast. Sheikh Ahmed died at the age of 76, prompting condolences from UAE leaders and officials.
Funeral arrangements are already underway, with the funeral prayer scheduled for Tuesday, September 22, at Za’abeel Grand Mosque in Dubai. Condolences will be received at Za’abeel Majlis over three days.
Sheikh Mohammed paid tribute to his brother, while Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum also expressed his grief and offered prayers for his uncle.
The mourning period is expected to bring a more subdued atmosphere across Dubai, with official flags at half-mast and some public events affected.
Sheikh Ahmed held prominent roles including Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security and Group Chairman of ARM Holding, while also maintaining a major presence in Dubai’s sporting community.
As the emirate observes the mourning period, attention remains focused on the royal family and the public tributes being made following his death.
