Tuesday, September 22, 2026 - China has expelled two of its most senior military officials from the Communist Party and the military, accusing them of corruption, disloyalty and serious disciplinary violations.
The officials are Zhang Youxia, a former vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, and Liu Zhenli, a former CMC member and chief of its Joint Staff Department. Their cases were approved at a Politburo meeting chaired by President Xi Jinping and have been transferred to military legal authorities for further action.
Chinese authorities said investigations found the two generals had violated political discipline, formed cliques and factions, abused their positions and accepted large sums of money.
They were also accused of using their influence to help others obtain promotions and failing to properly supervise relatives and close associates. Both men had already been removed from the Central Military Commission in August after investigations were announced in January.
The expulsions deepen a major shake-up within China's military leadership and intensify scrutiny of Xi Jinping's campaign to enforce discipline and political loyalty across the armed forces.
Zhang's removal is particularly significant because of his senior position and long-standing association with China's top leadership. The cases now move toward possible prosecution, while the wider military restructuring continues to attract international attention.
