Saturday, August 8, 2026 - Prince Harry once had a surprisingly ordinary career ambition: working at a ski resort in Austria.


In his memoir Spare, the Duke of Sussex recalled being fascinated by the idea of working at the resort in Lech am Arlberg, a place associated with childhood family holidays. He even considered becoming a ski instructor, but said his father, then Prince Charles, reacted negatively to the idea.

Harry’s comments offer a glimpse into the pressure he felt while trying to find a direction beyond royal expectations. Rather than immediately embracing a conventional royal career, he imagined a life where he could work in a completely different environment and build an identity away from the institution.

His eventual military career became a major part of his public identity, with Harry later describing his time in the Army as one of the periods when he felt most purposeful and connected to ordinary people.

The revelation remains striking because Harry’s relationship with royal life has continued to shape his career choices years later. After stepping back as a senior working royal and relocating to the United States, he has built a public profile around media projects, charitable work and the Invictus Games.

Yet his old ski-instructor ambition shows just how different his path might have looked if he had been free to pursue the quieter career he once imagined.
