Friday, August 14, 2026 - U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar has secured the Democratic nomination for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, delivering a decisive victory in the August 11 primary. Omar won more than 80% of the vote, comfortably defeating four challengers and positioning herself to seek a fifth term in Congress. The result reinforces her strong standing in the Minneapolis-centered district.
With more than 95% of ballots counted, Omar had received about 122,640 votes, far ahead of Julie Trang Le with 10,201 and Latonya Reeves with 9,131. The Republican primary was won by John Nagel, setting up the November general election. The 5th District is considered one of the strongest Democratic seats in Minnesota, giving Omar a significant advantage heading into the next stage of the campaign.
The landslide gives Omar fresh political momentum as the 2026 midterm elections approach.
