Tuesday, August 11, 2026 - Firefighters are struggling to contain a rapidly expanding wildfire in southwestern Spain as extreme heat, strong winds and difficult terrain continue to drive the flames.
The blaze near the medieval town of Niebla in Huelva province has spread across nearly 20,000 hectares, overwhelming crews trying to establish control lines and prevent new fronts from forming.
The situation remains urgent as flying embers are creating new spot fires ahead of the main blaze. Around 500 residents have already been evacuated from affected areas, while authorities are considering further precautionary evacuations as conditions remain dangerous.
The fire is unfolding during an exceptionally severe wildfire season, with more than 244,000 hectares already burned across Spain this year, according to Reuters.
Authorities are racing to limit the damage as firefighters battle a combination of heat, wind and dry vegetation that is making the operation increasingly difficult.
