Monday, August 17, 2026 - Bruce Springsteen is mourning the death of longtime friend and collaborator Dave Marsh, describing the influential rock critic and author as an “irreplaceable” loss to the E Street family.
Marsh died at his home in Connecticut on August 14, 2026, aged 76. In a deeply personal tribute, Springsteen remembered him as a passionate rock ’n’ roll lifer who was intelligent, outspoken and, by his own description, “fantastically argumentative.”
Marsh played a significant role in documenting Springsteen’s career, writing the first major book about the singer, Born to Run, and later publishing Glory Days: Bruce Springsteen in the 1980s.
Springsteen said Marsh “always had my back,” while also recalling the critic’s fierce personality and his ability to turn debates about music into memorable encounters. His close relationship with Springsteen and the wider E Street circle made his loss particularly personal.
Springsteen’s tribute has put the spotlight back on Marsh’s enormous influence on rock journalism and on the story of one of America’s biggest rock stars.
Beyond his writing, Marsh was known for his work at Creem, Rolling Stone and other major music publications, helping shape critical conversations around rock music for decades.
For Springsteen, however, the loss is much more than the passing of a respected writer—it is the loss of a close friend whose passion, arguments and unwavering support remained part of the E Street family.
