Friday, August 14, 2026 - Heavy rain has forced Beijing to shut hundreds of tourist attractions and disrupt public transport as authorities step up emergency measures across the Chinese capital.
More than 300 tourist and camping sites were closed, while about 250 bus routes were suspended and 10 subway lines were ordered to operate at reduced speeds. Sightseeing boat services were also halted as the city faced rising flood and landslide risks.
The weather emergency has also triggered evacuations in vulnerable areas. Authorities moved more than 5,000 elderly people from care facilities and evacuated residents in mountainous and low-lying locations exposed to flooding and geological hazards.
All 3,357 construction sites in the city were ordered to stop work, while reservoirs released water in advance to create additional capacity for incoming rainfall.
Beijing remained under an orange rainstorm warning as forecasters expected more heavy rain across parts of China.
The disruption is a serious warning for residents, businesses and tourists, with authorities urging people to avoid high-risk areas as flooding and landslides remain possible. The immediate priority is clear: protect lives, keep emergency routes open and limit unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
