Saturday, August 29, 2026 - Seventy-seven pilgrims associated with the Isha Foundation remain unaccounted for after a devastating flash flood struck Gyirong near the China-Nepal border.
The group was returning from the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage when the flood hit, cutting communications and leaving families desperate for information. The pilgrims, reportedly from 19 nationalities, have remained out of contact since the disaster.
Rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate those missing, but the scale of destruction is making the search extremely difficult. The flood reportedly inundated the immigration facility where the group was located, while huge amounts of mud and debris have covered parts of the affected area.
Authorities and organisers are working with governments and diplomatic missions to establish the whereabouts of the missing pilgrims and assist their families.
The disappearance of the 77 pilgrims has added urgency to an already catastrophic disaster along the Nepal-Tibet border, where thousands of people are reported missing and hundreds have died.
