Wednesday, August 25, 2026 - Two sailors have been rescued after the Panama-flagged MV Ocean Winner sank in the Bay of Bengal while carrying iron ore from Odisha to Singapore.
The vessel went down about 240 nautical miles off Odisha’s Paradip coast after losing contact with authorities. The ship had 24 crew members aboard—20 Chinese, three from Myanmar and one from Bangladesh.
The two rescued sailors were found on life rafts by the merchant vessel MT Aisopos, which diverted after receiving a distress alert.
Indian Navy and Coast Guard aircraft and vessels are now searching for the remaining 22 crew members, with other ships in the area also alerted to assist. Authorities have not yet confirmed why the vessel sank.
The rescue operation is now a race against time as authorities intensify the search across a vast stretch of ocean. The Indian Navy has deployed surveillance aircraft while Coast Guard vessels have joined the operation, but the fate of the remaining sailors remains uncertain.
