Spain wildfire burns more than 12,000 hectares near Zaragoza, largest this year

Friday, July 17, 2026- Spain is battling its largest wildfire of the year after a fast-moving blaze scorched more than 12,000 hectares near Zaragoza in the Aragón region.

Fueled by extreme heat, strong winds, and dry vegetation, the fire has forced the evacuation of several villages and prompted a massive emergency response as firefighters work around the clock to stop the flames from spreading further.

More than 1,000 residents have been evacuated from affected communities as hundreds of firefighters, supported by aircraft and emergency units, continue containment efforts.

Authorities warn that changing weather conditions and high temperatures are making the wildfire difficult to control, while additional fires remain active in other parts of Spain.

The wildfire underscores the growing threat of extreme weather across southern Europe, where prolonged heat and drought are increasing the risk of destructive fires.

Officials are urging residents to follow evacuation orders, avoid restricted areas, and remain alert as Spain enters one of its most dangerous periods of the wildfire season.
