Friday, July 31, 2026 -South Africa has appointed Deputy Minister of Finance Ashor Sarupen to lead the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF), one of the country’s largest retirement funds.
The move comes as the government focuses on strengthening oversight, improving governance, and ensuring long-term sustainability for millions of public sector workers who rely on the fund for their retirement security.
Sarupen’s appointment places him at the centre of efforts to address key challenges facing the pension system, including investment performance, transparency, and responsible management of public funds.
The GEPF, which manages hundreds of billions of rand in assets, plays a critical role in South Africa’s financial landscape, making leadership decisions closely watched by employees, investors, and policymakers.
The appointment is expected to bring renewed attention to the future of public sector pensions and the need for effective reforms.
As economic pressures continue to affect households and retirement planning, the government will be under pressure to ensure the fund remains stable, trusted, and capable of protecting the financial future of its members.
