Wednesday, June 10, 2026- Sri Lanka’s government has, for the first time, directly accused a former intelligence chief of orchestrating the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings, a coordinated series of attacks that killed 279 people and injured more than 500.
The allegation was made in parliament by the country’s Public Security Minister, who said investigators had uncovered evidence linking the senior former security official to the planning and direction of the operation.
The Easter Sunday attacks, carried out on April 21, 2019, targeted three churches and three luxury hotels, striking worshippers during Easter services and tourists during morning meals.
The bombings, which involved multiple suicide attackers, remain one of the deadliest acts of violence in Sri Lanka’s modern history and triggered widespread national and international shock.
The latest accusation marks a major escalation in the long-running investigation, which has already seen arrests of senior security figures and renewed political tension over accountability for intelligence failures and possible internal involvement.
The accused former spy chief has previously denied any wrongdoing, and the case is expected to intensify scrutiny of Sri Lanka’s security establishment as authorities pursue further legal action.
