KIM inspects nuclear-capable 5,000-ton warship, one year after capsizing

Friday, June 5, 2026- North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has inspected a newly repaired 5,000-ton-class warship believed to be capable of carrying nuclear weapons, marking a symbolic comeback for a vessel that had previously capsized during its initial launch attempt.

State media reported that the visit took place at a major naval shipyard, where the warship was presented as part of efforts to modernize the country’s maritime strike capabilities.

The inspection highlights Pyongyang’s continued push to expand its naval power and strengthen its deterrence posture amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula. Officials showcased upgrades to the vessel’s systems and emphasized its role in supporting long-range strike operations.

Analysts note that North Korea has increasingly focused on diversifying its delivery platforms, moving beyond land-based missiles to include sea-based systems that could complicate regional defense planning.

The warship’s recovery and reappearance also serve a political purpose, demonstrating resilience after what was widely viewed as an embarrassing failure during its original launch.

By bringing the vessel back into public view, North Korean leadership is signaling both technological progress and determination to advance its military modernization agenda despite earlier setbacks.
