Why TRUMP's AI executive order was pulled

Saturday, May 23, 2026-President Donald Trump abruptly postponed a major artificial intelligence executive order after mounting pressure from tech leaders, internal White House disagreements, and fears that the policy could slow America’s AI dominance against China.

The order was expected to introduce a voluntary federal review system for advanced AI models before companies released them publicly, focusing heavily on cybersecurity and national security risks.

According to multiple reports, influential Silicon Valley figures including Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg pushed back against parts of the proposal during last-minute discussions with Trump and senior advisers.

Critics inside the administration also questioned whether the order could evolve into broader federal AI regulation over time. Trump later told reporters he “didn’t like certain aspects” of the draft and worried it might interfere with U.S. competitiveness in the global AI race.

The decision highlights the growing power struggle between AI safety advocates and major technology companies racing to build more advanced systems. While some officials warned about emerging threats from highly capable AI models, the administration ultimately chose a lighter regulatory approach that favors rapid innovation and industry growth.

The reversal is widely seen as a major win for Big Tech, but it also leaves unresolved concerns about cybersecurity, misinformation, and the risks of increasingly powerful AI systems entering the public without stronger oversight.
