US says offensive phase of Iran war over as ship hit in Strait

Wednesday, May 6, 2026- The United States has declared that the offensive phase of its military campaign against Iran is over, even as fresh maritime violence in the Strait of Hormuz underscores how unstable the region remains.

Officials said the focus is now shifting from strikes to securing commercial shipping lanes, following weeks of escalating confrontation tied to the ongoing Iran conflict and regional naval operations.

The announcement came alongside reports that another commercial vessel was struck in the Strait of Hormuz shortly after the declaration, highlighting the continued risk to global shipping despite claims of de-escalation.

The Strait—one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes—has been at the center of repeated attacks, interceptions, and blockades in recent months, with military forces from multiple sides operating in close proximity.

While U.S. officials describe the shift as a transition toward defensive maritime protection and stabilization efforts, the situation on the ground suggests the conflict is not fully contained. Commercial shipping firms remain on high alert, and insurers continue to classify the region as high-risk.

With diplomacy, military posturing, and isolated strikes occurring almost simultaneously, the Strait of Hormuz has effectively become the most sensitive flashpoint in the wider Iran crisis.
