Monday, May 4, 2026-Lai Ching-te has completed a high-profile visit to Eswatini despite reported efforts by China to disrupt the trip through diplomatic pressure and airspace restrictions.
The visit, which had been delayed after several countries allegedly denied overflight permissions, highlights the ongoing geopolitical struggle between Taipei and Beijing over international recognition and influence. Taiwan described the journey as a deliberate assertion of its right to maintain foreign relations.
According to multiple reports, the trip faced logistical obstacles after Indian Ocean nations revoked or denied flight permissions, a move Taiwan attributes to Chinese diplomatic pressure.
Lai ultimately arrived in Eswatini—Taiwan’s only remaining diplomatic partner in Africa—via a rerouted and carefully coordinated flight plan. Once there, he met with King Mswati III and emphasized expanding cooperation in trade, agriculture, education, and cultural exchange, signaling Taiwan’s intent to deepen ties despite isolation efforts.
China condemned the visit, accusing Taiwan’s leadership of provocative behavior and continuing to reject any form of official state-to-state engagement with the island. Taiwan, however, framed the trip as a necessary step to preserve its international presence, with Lai stating that external pressure would not prevent engagement with global partners.
The visit underscores a widening diplomatic contest in which Taiwan continues to rely on its limited allies while China intensifies efforts to restrict its global space.
