Russia launches attack at Odesa region, cutting off power for thousands of people

Friday, May 29, 2026-Russia launched a large-scale overnight attack on Ukraine’s Odesa region, damaging critical infrastructure and leaving thousands of residents without electricity.

Ukrainian officials said drones and missiles targeted energy facilities and residential areas, triggering fires and emergency blackouts across multiple districts.

Local authorities described the strike as one of the latest attempts to weaken civilian infrastructure ahead of increased military pressure along southern Ukraine.

Emergency crews worked through the night to restore power while hospitals, transportation systems, and communication networks operated under backup systems.

Ukrainian air defenses reportedly intercepted several incoming drones, but officials confirmed that key energy infrastructure sustained serious damage. Residents shared images of darkened neighborhoods and burning facilities as concerns grew over the humanitarian impact of repeated attacks targeting essential public services.

The attack highlights the continuing shift toward infrastructure warfare as Russia intensifies pressure on Ukraine’s civilian systems alongside frontline operations.

Analysts warn that repeated strikes on energy networks are designed not only to disrupt military logistics but also to exhaust public resilience during prolonged conflict.

As Ukraine seeks additional air defense support from Western allies, the Odesa strike is adding urgency to international calls for faster military assistance and stronger protection of civilian infrastructure.
