PAUL MCCARTNEY turns lights out in Ed Sullivan Theater for COLBERT finale

Saturday, May 23, 2026-Music legend Paul McCartney brought an emotional close to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert by appearing unexpectedly during the program’s final broadcast at New York’s iconic Ed Sullivan Theater.

As host Stephen Colbert wrapped up his farewell monologue, McCartney walked onto the dimly lit stage and performed a stripped-down version of “Golden Slumbers,” creating one of the most emotional moments in late-night television this year.

The theater lights slowly faded as audience members stood in silence, many visibly emotional during the surprise appearance. McCartney, whose band The Beatles famously made their historic American television debut at the same venue in 1964, reflected briefly on the theater’s cultural legacy before dedicating the performance to “everyone who kept live television alive.”

Colbert appeared stunned by the surprise and thanked McCartney for helping close what he called “a beautiful chapter” in late-night broadcasting.

The finale quickly exploded across social media, with clips of the performance trending worldwide within hours. Fans and critics praised the moment as a fitting tribute to both Colbert’s run and the enduring history of the Ed Sullivan Theater itself.

Industry analysts say the emotional sendoff highlighted the continuing influence of legacy television personalities even as streaming platforms increasingly dominate entertainment. For many viewers, McCartney’s quiet performance transformed the finale from a television ending into a cultural moment that will likely be remembered for years.
