Tuesday, May 12, 2026 - A California man accused of attempting to assassinate Donald Trump at a White House press gala last month has pleaded not guilty in federal court.
Cole Allen, 31, entered the plea on Monday, May 11, during
an appearance at a federal district court in Washington, according to US media
reports. Allen reportedly appeared in court wearing an orange jumpsuit and
handcuffs. He faces four federal charges linked to the April 25 incident at the
annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, held at a downtown
Washington hotel. If convicted, he could face life in prison.
The charges include attempted assassination of the
president, transporting firearms and ammunition across state lines with intent
to commit a felony, using a firearm during a violent crime, and assaulting a
federal officer.
Prosecutors allege Allen, described as a highly educated
teacher and engineer, travelled from California to Washington by train carrying
several weapons, including a shotgun, handgun and multiple knives. Authorities
said Allen never got close to Trump or other guests attending the dinner.
Reports stated that Secret Service agents rushed the president from the venue
after gunshots were heard.
According to investigators, Allen was quickly tackled and
arrested after allegedly charging through a security checkpoint with weapons. A
Secret Service officer reportedly fired several shots at Allen during the
confrontation but did not hit him.
The annual White House press dinner traditionally attracts
journalists, politicians, celebrities and entertainers. Trump had often
boycotted the event in previous years but reportedly chose to attend this year.
The incident marked the third alleged assassination attempt against Trump in
less than two years.
In 2024, Trump survived an assassination attempt during a
campaign rally in Butler, where a gunman opened fire, k!lling one audience
member and grazing Trump’s ear. Months later, another armed suspect was
arrested near Trump while he was playing golf in West Palm Beach.
