Maine Gov. MILLS drops Democratic US Senate bid against PLATNER, lamenting a lack of campaign funds

Saturday, May 2, 2026-Maine Governor Janet Mills has officially dropped out of the state’s 2026 U.S. Senate race, citing a lack of campaign funds as the decisive factor in her decision. The move clears the path for Democratic challenger Graham Platner, who had already built strong momentum in the primary.

Mills, a longtime Democratic figure and two-term governor, had been seen as a top recruit for the party establishment to challenge Republican Senator Susan Collins.

However, she struggled to close a widening fundraising gap and keep pace with Platner’s rapidly growing support base. In recent weeks, her campaign lagged significantly in both polling and financial backing, making continued competition increasingly difficult.

Platner, a political newcomer and oyster farmer, has gained traction with a populist message that appeals to progressive voters and grassroots donors. His rise has reshaped the Democratic primary into a broader debate over establishment leadership versus outsider energy.

With Mills now out, attention shifts to how unified Democrats can become heading into what is expected to be a closely contested general election against Collins.
