Congress expected to end the record 75-day partial government shutdown

Saturday, May 2, 2026-Congress is now expected to bring an end to a record 75-day partial government shutdown, marking one of the longest funding crises in U.S. history.

The breakthrough follows months of political deadlock over federal spending, particularly tied to homeland security and immigration enforcement, which left key agencies operating under severe constraints and disrupted services across the country.

The agreement reached in Washington restores funding to major departments and allows critical operations such as transportation security, emergency response, and federal workforce payments to resume.

Lawmakers ultimately moved forward with a compromise package after pressure mounted from economic disruptions, staffing shortages, and growing public frustration over the prolonged shutdown.

While the immediate crisis is being resolved, the deal does not erase the deeper political divisions that caused it. Immigration policy and long-term budget priorities remain unresolved flashpoints, meaning this shutdown may be less of an ending than a pause in an ongoing fiscal standoff.

For now, Congress’s action brings relief but also signals that future funding battles are already looming.
