Car bombing at checkpoint kills at least 15 in northwest Pakistan

Sunday, May 10, 2026- A deadly car bombing at a security checkpoint in northwestern Pakistan has killed at least 15 police officers, in another major escalation of militant violence in the region.

According to police officials, attackers detonated an explosives-laden vehicle at the checkpoint before opening fire on responding officers, triggering a powerful blast that destroyed parts of the outpost and left the area in ruins. The attack took place in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, a region that has seen repeated militant assaults in recent months.

Rescue teams rushed to the scene as emergency services declared a state of alert in nearby hospitals. Reports indicate that officers were killed both in the initial explosion and during the subsequent exchange of fire with militants. The scale of destruction suggests the use of a large quantity of explosives, with authorities still working to recover bodies and secure the area.

No group has immediately been confirmed in early police statements, though suspicion is likely to fall on militant networks active in the region, including factions linked to the Pakistani Taliban.

The attack underscores the ongoing security crisis along Pakistan’s northwestern border, where coordinated bombings, ambushes, and armed raids have increased pressure on law enforcement and raised urgent concerns about stability and counterterrorism capacity.
