Body of second U.S. soldier who went missing amid training exercise recovered in Morocco

Thursday, May 14, 2026- The body of a second U.S. soldier who went missing during a training exercise in Morocco has been recovered, marking a tragic conclusion to a large-scale multinational search operation.

The soldier disappeared earlier this month during the African Lion exercise, a major joint military drill involving U.S. and partner forces. Officials confirmed the recovery after days of intensive search efforts across difficult coastal terrain.

The discovery follows the earlier recovery of the first soldier, who also went missing under similar circumstances during off-duty movement near a cliffside area. Search teams from both the U.S. and Moroccan military deployed air, sea, and ground assets in an urgent effort to locate the missing personnel.

The operation drew significant attention due to the scale of resources involved and the high-risk environment where the incident occurred.

With both recoveries now confirmed, attention is shifting toward understanding how the incident happened during what is considered one of the largest annual training exercises in the region.

Investigations are expected to focus on movement patterns, terrain conditions, and safety protocols during off-duty periods. The case underscores the operational risks that persist even outside active combat scenarios, especially in rugged and unpredictable training environments.
