Activists say Israeli forces intercepted Gaza aid flotilla near Crete, detaining crews

Saturday, May 2, 2026-Activists say a Gaza-bound aid flotilla was intercepted in the Mediterranean near Crete by Israel forces, with several crew members reportedly detained during the operation.

The flotilla, organized by humanitarian groups aiming to deliver supplies to Gaza Strip, was stopped before reaching its destination, reigniting debate over access restrictions and maritime blockades in the region.

Organizers claim the vessels were carrying essential aid and were operating under international humanitarian objectives, while Israeli authorities have consistently argued that such flotillas could be linked to unauthorized transfers or security risks involving groups like Hamas.

The interception has once again placed civilian aid efforts at the center of a deeply politicized and militarized conflict environment.

The incident adds to mounting international scrutiny over the humanitarian situation in Gaza, where access to food, medical supplies, and reconstruction materials remains heavily restricted.

Calls for independent monitoring and protected humanitarian corridors are growing louder, but tensions at sea and on the ground continue to complicate delivery efforts.
