115 fall sick as norovirus rips through cruise ship

Tuesday, May 12, 2026- A fast-moving outbreak of norovirus has left 115 passengers and crew members ill aboard a cruise ship, triggering immediate containment measures on board.

The highly contagious stomach virus has spread rapidly through shared spaces, prompting the cruise operator to tighten sanitation protocols and isolate affected individuals while continuing the voyage under strict monitoring.

Norovirus is known for spreading quickly in closed environments like ships due to close contact, shared dining areas, and high-touch surfaces. Symptoms typically include sudden vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and nausea, often appearing within hours of exposure.

While most people recover within a few days, the speed at which it spreads makes outbreaks difficult to control once they begin.

Health teams on board and onshore are focusing on deep cleaning, restricting movement in affected areas, and reinforcing hygiene practices such as frequent handwashing and surface disinfection.

Passengers have been advised to report symptoms early and avoid close contact with others if they feel unwell. The incident highlights how quickly norovirus can disrupt travel operations and the importance of strict hygiene discipline in preventing further spread.
