1 dead and 9 missing after pickup truck falls off bridge in southern China

Monday, May 18, 2026-One person has been confirmed dead and nine others remain missing after a pickup truck plunged off a bridge in southern China, triggering a large-scale emergency response operation.

Rescue teams were deployed immediately to the scene, where debris and strong river currents have made recovery efforts increasingly difficult. Authorities say search operations are continuing around the clock as divers and emergency crews attempt to locate survivors.

Preliminary reports indicate the vehicle lost control while crossing the bridge before breaking through safety barriers and falling into the water below.

Officials have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the crash, but investigations are underway to determine whether mechanical failure, road conditions, or human error played a role. The incident has raised renewed concerns about rural road safety standards and infrastructure maintenance in parts of the region.

The tragedy has prompted a coordinated response involving local emergency services, maritime rescue units, and medical teams stationed nearby. Authorities are urging the public to avoid speculation as families await updates on the missing passengers.

As search efforts continue, the focus remains on recovery and investigation, with officials expected to release more details once conditions allow for a full assessment of the accident.
